Kensington #1

Kensington #1.

Completed January 23, 2005. Acrylic on 8"x10" stretched gallery-wrapped canvas.

Kensington is a cat who was brutally tortured and killed by three Toronto men, who videotaped their evil deeds (more information about Kensington's case is available here). I painted this portrait for Freedom for Animals, a small, all-volunteer Toronto animal rights group which has committed to ensure that what happened to Kensington is never forgotten. Freedom for Animals is working to strengthen Canada's pathetic anti-cruelty laws; despite the undeniable evidence of the extreme suffering caused to Kensington, the perpetrators all received very light sentences—in one case, 90 days to be served on weekends. Freedom for Animals also operates the Kensington Market Stray Cat Rescue, which provides food and veterinary care for cats in need, and finds foster and permanent homes for them.

Freedom for Animals has a store at CafePress.com featuring products with this image.
